Three or four times a year, I make it to Shabbat at Temple Israel, - TopicsExpress

Three or four times a year, I make it to Shabbat at Temple Israel, Memphis. I made it this evening. The congregation is hosting a youth leadership event this weekend from Jewish congregations throughout the South. There were many references to Dr. King mixed with the Torah portion that dealt with avoiding indifference, and they were echoed in things that we sang/chanted. Rabbi Greenstein said--and I agree with him--that we are at a low point with indifference today. He reminded them that the Civil Rights Movement was a youth movement, and one of the prayers asked God to disturb us rather than grant Peace on this Shabbat. I was thinking about some remarks credited to Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who said that a person should leave Temple angry after the reading of Torah because of the presence of injustice in the world. What would happen if people of good will actually did rise above indifference? P.S. Rabbi Greenstein regularly shares his talents in Episcopal parishes in the Memphis area.
