Three parents were charged in a Nanyuki court with marrying off a child. The three included parents of the 14-year-old girl and the mother of her alleged husband. Ms Selia Lentali, Mr Nguyuni Lentali and Ms Alice Sadi denied the charge of intentionally failing to protect the child from a harmful cultural rite when they were brought before senior resident magistrate Vincent Kiptoon. The charge stated on August 9 at Jua Kali village in Laikipia East the three married off the 14-year-old girl which negatively affected her welfare and psychological development. The prosecutor said the girl who was in standard seven at Lailagwan primary school in Laikipia East was married off at elaborate ceremony at her home in Rugutu sub-location about 20 kilometres from Nanyuki town. Her alleged husband escaped arrest by police but his mother was arrested. The court heard that the girl had been rescued from a home in Ngarendare village in Laikipia North more than 50 kilometres away. The court had last week issued warrants of arrest for the girl’s parents and the man who had married her. It had also instructed the police to have the girl undergo a medical examination and present a report by yesterday. Mr Kiptoon released the accused on a Sh50,000 bond each with a surety of a similar amount and set the hearing for September 23. They were remanded in custody after failing to raise the bond. Meanwhile, the court placed the girl at Nanyuki children’s after reversing its earlier order to have her remanded at the local police station. The move followed the intervention of the district children officer Mr John Chege and the girl’s aunt Ms Ms Jane Naitiman.
