Three volunteers from the Washtenaw-Lenawee Chapter of The American Red Cross responded to a 53-unit apartment fire in the 1500 block of Stewart Road in Monroe on Saturday afternoon, supporting teams from the Monroe and Detroit Regional Chapters. Forty-nine units were occupied. A total of 31 food and clothing assistance cases were created for residents affected in the multi-unit fire by Red Cross caseworkers, who were among 17 staff members and volunteers on scene. The apartment complex owner will provide temporary lodging until Tuesday for all residents in need. Meijer will donate $500 in gift cards, and The Salvation Army will host a drive for clothing and shoes on Monday. The Monroe County Chapter of The Red Cross will continue to provide service to the residents affected, ensure that they have a recovery plan in place, and will maintain a list of other community support available.
