If Putin had launched an obvious set piece invasion of Ukraine – a sort of Operation Barbarossa in reverse – then he would have risked a draconian reaction. Instead, he has chosen to turn up the temperature degree by degree and, slowly but inexorably, escalate his military intervention in eastern Ukraine. His creeping annexation of eastern Ukraine is proceeding before our eyes. He wants us to wake up one morning and discover that large swathes of Ukrainian territory are under Russias de facto control – and there is nothing that anyone can do about it. His chosen method is a special form of warfare, combining internal subversion, the sponsoring of local rebels, economic pressure, propaganda – and cross-border military strikes. Putins primary aim is to dope and chloroform the West into confused acquiescence.
