Throwback Thursday! In the wake of the 1983 America’s Cup loss to Australia, US national sentiment for taking back the cup was at an all-time high. One of the most notable campaigns came from right here in the Midwest, the ‘Heart of America Challenge.’ The campaign represented a true grass-roots effort, contested for the first time by Chicago Yacht Club, and spearheaded by Buddy Melges with Gary Jobson at the helm. Determination and serious bootstrapping carried the team all the way to Freemantle and the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger series. Unfortunately for Melges and Jobson, they lost out to compatriot Dennis Connor, who eventually brought the Cup back stateside.
