Throwback Thursday Pick of the Week: The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy - TopicsExpress

Throwback Thursday Pick of the Week: The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy (1965) Kind of a strange pick, I know. But there is a reason. Richard Zehringer (on guitar and vocals) and his brother Randy (on drums) formed The McCoys with bassist Dennis Kelly. They had the one major hit Hang On Sloopy in 1965. You didnt hear much about The McCoys after that...well, you did, kinda...but probably didnt realize it. You see, Richard Zehringer is the birth name of...can you guess? can you? huh? Richard Zehringer = Rick Derringer Rick Derringer played with Johnny Winter on several of his albums as well as with Edgar Winter in Edgar Winters White Trash and The Edgar Winter Group. Derringer also had a few solo albums of his own. As a side note...for a short time there was a silly notion that Rick Derringer and Suzi Quatro were really one and the same. Derringer did have a pretty boy face. Anyway, somewhat of a lesson here. While Hang On Sloopy may not have been a blazin rock song, it was a starting point...it got The McCoys on tour with The Rolling Stones...and it got Rick Derringer recognized.
