October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month and in recognition of that, Cornerstone Advocacy Service will host a vigil tonight (October 7) to remember and honor the individuals and families who have been victimized by domestic abuse and violence during the past year. The vigil will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Purgatory Creek Park Pavilion, located at the intersection of Prairie Center Drive and Technology Drive in Eden Prairie. Joining Cornerstone at the vigil will be law enforcement officers from a number of jurisdictions including Eden Prairie. Eden Prairie’s mayor, Nancy Tyra-Lukens, will also speak. Last year in Eden Prairie officers responded to 76 domestic assault calls and 275 domestic disputes where no assault took place. When officers respond to a domestic dispute call, they focus on the immediate medical needs of the victim and ensure that the violator is arrested. Next, the officer provides resources for the victim so they can get the help they need. After officers leave the scene of a domestic call, Cornerstone helps victims with the next steps necessary in order to prevent any further violence and to rebuild their lives. This may include housing, transportation, therapy, legal services, support groups and life skills workshops. When officers respond to any kind of domestic dispute, the case is referred to the department’s Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) where officers work with the individuals involved to get resources to help prevent any future violence. The EPPD is grateful for the work Cornerstone does in our community. Each year when the City Council reviews the City’s budget, they include funding to continue our partnership with Cornerstone which has been in place for the past 25 years. For more information on the vigil please contact Cornerstone at 952-884-0376.
