Thursday 05, September 2013 TOPIC: Chiefest Among Ten Thousand. TEXT: SONG OF SOLOMON 5:9-16 KEY VERSE: “My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand” (Song of Solomon 5:10). The world has gotten so used to the pop-culture ideal of love that it has lost the true essence of love. The entertainment industry is awash with this species of love with all its unrealistic images that have led to massive deception, frustration and disappointment. That not-withstanding, love remains one of the most potent forces that affect our lives. The episode in today’s text concerning a spouse and her bridegroom illustrates the compelling power of pure love. The spouse, here referred to as the “fairest among women”, was in search of her beloved who had sought admission into her house but left before she could come out to receive him. She combed the city seeking her beloved and suffered undue maltreatment in the process. But her affection towered above anything she had to put up with. As the unsympathetic watchmen failed her, she turned to the daughters of Jerusalem to help in the search. The intensity of her passion aroused their curiosity as they wondered what was so special about her beloved. She thus had the opportunity to describe his elegance with vivid and superlative language. This account is symbolic of the relationship that exists between the Church and Christ, her Bridegroom. Of all the institutions in the world, the Church is the most excellent, being espoused to the King of kings and Lord of lords. “The love of Christ, which passeth knowledge” should elicit the same degree of reciprocal love in us so much that we are willing to suffer persecution and torture for Him. We should also be ready to get the wondering world develop interest in and seek after the most excellent and lovely Saviour and Lover of our soul. The world may not comprehend the whole beauty and sweetness in Christ, but those who have tasted same must demonstrate it by a passionate devotion to Him in fellowship and service. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Seek Christ with passion if you truly love Him.
