Thursday 7th August 2014 On this day in 1821, Caroline of Brunswick, ‘the injured queen ’, died, allegedly of vexation at being refused entry to Westminster Abbey the previous month for the coronation of her husband, King George IV. Canapés Served in the Drawing Rooms A Salad of Arran Hot-Smoked Salmon with Strawberries and Fennel We are incredibly lucky to have one of the finest smokehouses in Scotland on our doorstep. Here we use their fabulous hot-smoked salmon together with fresh Florence fennel and Scottish strawberries, served on home grown salad leaves and a dressing of honey, Arran mustard and Lochranza whisky. A veritable cornucopia of local goodies! Served with home baked bread. Tonight’s choices are Parmesan and Cayenne Twists or Rosemary and Cranberry Granary Loaf followed by Cream of Sage Soup A light cream soup made with fresh young sage leaves from the potager and served with a sharp apple compôte made with our own apples and frazzled sage leaves. Sage had been used medicinally for centuries and there is some evidence that, among other effects, it can calm nervousness, aid digestion and reduce perspiration. Tastes good and does you good, then Nasello all’ Palermitana with Caponata Or, in plain English, fillet of hake as the ladies of Palermo make it. A recipe Antony picked up in Sicily during his youth, and one which brings back fond memories. The hake is baked in olive oil infused with anchovies, garlic and tomatoes under a herb crust and served on her b roasted potatoes together with a warm Sicilian salad of tomatoes, celery and aubergines, seasoned with tears of nostalgia! followed by A Mango Parfait A rich home made mango ice cream with passionfruit and orange sauce served with a wee Arran cream berry meringue and a tiny raspberry cheesecake Or A Selection of Excellent Cheeses A selection of Scottish cheeses, featuring Arran cheeses from our local award-winning cheesemaker and served with fresh grapes and celery, together with chutney made from our own plums and apples, and a selection of Arran oatcakes and water biscuits (£6.75 as an extra course) Coffee and Petit Fours served in the Drawing Rooms (Cappuccino or Espresso £2.50) £45.00 Should you wish to discuss this menu, please contact us before 5pm, as changes cannot be made after then
