After Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, he landed his second major movie role with The Mask. The Mask starred Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss, a lovable loser, who one day comes across an ancient mask belonging to Loki, the mythical god of mischief. He puts the Mask on and is eventually turned into a whole other person that is the complete opposite of himself. For example, Stanley is quiet and polite, whereas the Mask is loud and obnoxious. As the Mask, hes chased by the police and mobsters, and romances a girl named Tina, who is way out of his league. The role of Tina was the first movie role for what current A-List actress? Answer: Cameron Diaz OTHER FUN THE MASK FACTS: Originally, the oversized teeth were only going tobe used in silent scenes, but since Carrey learned how to talk with them in, they came up with more things for him to do. They saved a lot of money on special effects with Carrey. His movements were so limber and cartoonish that the producers felt they didnt need to be animated any further. The banana yellow suit worn by the Mask was based on a suit that Carreys mother made for him the night of his first performance as a standup comic. Anna Nicole Smith was the original choice for Tina until they found Diaz one day as she was leaving a modeling agency. She was cast only one week before filming started. There were plans for a sequel, but Carrey declined to reprise his role. Carrey said in interviews that one of the things that attracted him to the part was that Stanley had a love of cartoons, and so does he. Carrey based the part of Stanley on his real life father. The scene where The Mask is being chased by gangsters, pulls out a condom, and says, Sorry wrong pocket, was improvised by Carrey. The part where Milo the dog doesnt want to give Carrey the frisbee back is also unscripted. Carrey was paid $450,000 for the film. He had signed the contract before Ace Ventura was released and became a big hit. For his next film, Dumb and Dumber, Carrey made $7 million.
