Thursday December 11 Dougies Daily Trivia Mortal Kombat was one of the most popular video game series of all time. I remember when I worked at Video Etc, those games just flew off the shelf. So naturally, they took the next step and made a movie. Mortal Kombat hit the theaters in 1995. It was very successful considering that they didnt have any big name actors in the movie. Mortal Kombat was at the top of the box office for three weeks straight. It starred Christopher Lambert as Lord Rayden. He approaches three people; Liu Kang (Robin Shou), Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby), and Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson-Sampras) about participating in a special tournament. Special fighters are selected to compete against members of a realm called Outworld. The Outworld forces are lead by the evil Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). Outworld has won nine tournaments in a row. If they win this tournament, a portal will open up, and they would be able to invade our world. Its up to Liu, Johnny, and Sonya to stop it.Todays question: Another actress was originally cast as Sonya Blade, but had to drop out after breaking her wrist. Who was it? Answer: Cameron Diaz. OTHER MORTAL KOMBAT FACTS: Originally, the script was written with an R Rating in mind. It had more graphic violence and crude language. It was later toned down to get a PG-13 rating. Robin Shou originally turned down the role of Liu Kang. He reconsidered on the advice of his agent. Brandon Lee had originally signed on to play Johnny Cage, but died while on the set for The Crow. Jean Claude Van Damme was offered the role of Johnny Cage, but turned it down to do Street Fighter instead. To prepare for his role, Linden Ashby trained in Karate and Tae Kwan Do. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa auditioned for Shang Tsung in full costume and standing on a chair. Steven Spielberg, who is a big video game fan, was going to appear at the beginning of the movie as Johnnys director. However, he was unable to appear in the movie due to a scheduling conflict. Bridgette Wilson-Sampras did all of her own stunts including the fight scenes in the movie. She was offered a stunt double, but turned it down. Trevor Goddard, who plays Kano, is from England. He decided on his own to try an Australian accent for the part. The producers liked it, so it was kept in the movie. After Johnny kills Scorpion, he leaves an autographed photo of himself. That was his friendship move in the video game. Ed Boon, who co-crated the Mortal Kombat video game, provides the voice for Scorpion. Two scenes that were scripted, but did not appear in the film: There was a burial for Art Lean (Johnnys friend that Goro kills) and Sonya was supposed to fight Jade. Despite all of the action sequences, the injuries were minimal. The most serious was Linden Ashby, who suffered a bruised kidney. The Emperors appearance at the end was added at the last minute. Originally, the movie was supposed to end with Rayden congratulating the good guys for winning the tournament, and them celebrating. The movies soundtrack went platinum in two weeks.
