Thursday, February 13, 7:30 p.m. Rabih Alamenddine reads from An Unnecessary Woman. We are absolutely thrilled to have our old friend Rabih Alameddine back at Readers to talk about his latest novel, An Unnecessary Woman. There is probably no one alive today who can better navigate the cultural thicket of the Middle East and explain it to a Western audience than Rabih. Set in modern, war-torn Beirut, this novel explores the difficult life of a divorced and childless woman in a society thats been rendered comatose by religion and endless mayhem. Yiyun Li, another of our favorite novelists, describes him this way: There are many ways to break someones heart, but Rabih Alameddine is one rare writer who not only breaks our hearts but gives each broken piece a new life. And just as War and Peace or One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch is not really a tale of history and politics, An Unnecessary Woman illuminates the true province of literature, which is compassion and the resilience of our fellow human beings. Please come out to see and hear Rabih. Youll be so glad you did.
