Jake Wright made a Willy Mays-like play in the first, using a two-hand basket catch with his back to the plate to rob a Nishnabotna hitter of extra bases. Alec Sorensen scored the Cards first run after taking a 2-2 curve to left for a single. A six run third broke open a close game. Wright and Graber walked in front of an Avery Umphreys bunt single to load the bases. Two wild pitches made is 3-0. Grant Mantell and Brett Daley walked in front of another Sorensen single. Nick Paulsen chipped in with a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Paulsen, playing in right cut down a Nishnabotna runner with a nice throw in the bottom half of the inning as Nishnabotna tried to rally back into the game. The fifth inning saw Braxton Mittan lead off with a blast over the wall in right field, the Cards third homer of the day. Nolan Mantell used a nice curve to K the first two hitters in the bottom of the fifth, then Daley ended the inning, laying out in the hole to take away a sure hit, then firing a strike across the diamond to stun the Nishnabotna nine. The seventh and final inning saw Travis Manzer collect his first Varsity hit and Rbi. Defensively, the Cardinals went around the horn 5-4-3, Mantell to Blackledge and over to first to end the game as Nolan Mantell registered the teams first save, with a three inning relief effort. The Cardinals return home Friday to host conference foe Riverside.
