Thursday Tempo - Obedience is not a weakness… By Obuogo Steve covering for Phyllis Gathecha Sometimes I ask myself why God in His wisdom gave specific instructions basically for everything. Moreover, in any religion as well, be it Christianity, Islamic religion, Budhism or any other, there are specific guidelines which govern how people relate. Many times I find it very common for people to defy order and behave as if they do not owe anyone an explanation to anything. Do not deceive yourself, in every set up there are rules and regulations as well as a chain of command. There has to be someone in control, there has to be someone who gives directions and others to follow. That is why there are governments for countries as well as management boards for companies Obedience is not an element of weakness. Some people tend to think that being employed sometimes subjects one to being commanded and ‘ruled’ unnecessarily but I want to tell you in your face, you have to accept to be given command by someone. If you think being self employed for example does not have such chains of command, wait till a client/customer starts to dictate terms for you or new government regulations force you to change the nature of your business. And as they always say, “the customer is always right”. It is therefore important that as we take different paths for our career growth and development, we need to understand the fact that every set-up has to work with rules and regulations and it is someone’s responsibility to oversee the execution of the rules. If you cannot accept to be given commands, then you cannot lead yourself and others. Key to note as well is that in as much as you are a follower of such commands, it doesn’t mean that you should turn yourself into a robot who does not question or consult. Being a “yes, yes” person is not healthy at all. I urge that in as much as you question, critique or consult, do it in a respectful and courteous manner. Good leaders and employers prefer people who challenge objectively and with reason. Finally, I’d urge you to always be part of a solution not part of a problem in every sphere of life… Have a FUNtastic afternoon… By Obuogo Steve, covering for Phyllis Gathecha
