Thursday at Bishops School... After a night of thunder and rain, a cold front passed through the area. Today our sessions included the following: The first talk, given by Card. Muller of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, entitled The Mission of the Bishop: Teacher and Witness of Faith presented us with the challenge that the teaching function of a bishop is a great gift that does a great amount of good. St Ambrose expressed the challenge well when he observed, I find myself in the condition of someone who must teach, when I still need to learn. This dynamic will be a balancing act. Nevertheless, the bishop must be a witness of the resurrection - remaining in contact with Christ risen and present among us - and presenting us with the teachings which have their foundation in Christ and the Apostles. The second talk, given by Card. Canizares Llovera of the Congregation for Divine Worship (and soon to be Bishop of Valencia, Spain) entitled The BIshop at the Service of the Sanctification of Gods People addressed the dignity of the liturgical celebration and the administration of the sacraments. When celebrated with dignity and care, the sacraments more clearly express the link we have with God. Our desire of a presence to journey with us seems ever more clear in the life of the Church and faithful. An emphasis was put on Sunday as the Day of The Lord. If Sunday is not somehow different in the rhythm of our lives, then everything will become the same -- boringly the same. Sunday becomes a day in which we can say thanks, acknowledge Gods presence -- that we belong to Another, and link ourselves with the Christian community for prayer and support. The liturgy itself does not belong to any one priest or a bishop to do what we want. It belongs to the entire Church and thus it can be a source of sanctification of Gods people when celebrated prayerfully and with dignity. He also underscored the positive outcomes that have been noted around the world as a result of Eucharistic Adoration. A blessing to you all!
