Tiger petition to DEAN RITCHIE NRL The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) 21 August 2013 How can the Tigers name Benji Marshall. The guy is a complete muppet. He will never be remembered as one of the greats in my opinion #nrl. Tynan Jones @tynanjones The @Wests_Tigers need to drop Benji Marshall. It will be hard given his name but he’s already playing for union. Not wanting an injury. From @pup218, Daniel Mc. WESTS Tigers are struggling on the field — and off it. The Daily Telegraph can reveal Balmain would be unwilling to sacrifice Wests Tigers board positions to joint venture partner Western Suburbs, even if Wests Ashfield injects cash to help save the club financially. But Balmain would forego board positions if independent directors were appointed. Wests Tigers need a cash injection — some suggest up to $1 million — to help the club’s long-term sustainability. However, the club is in no danger of collapsing. Wests Ashfield claims it would be prepared to help financially but only if it took control of the board by obtaining an extra director’s position. The Balmain side won’t agree to the proposal, claiming the club needs corporate governance reform. One source close to Balmain said: “Giving up positions to Wests wouldn’t be in the best interests of the Wests Tigers. The NRL has said it would be prepared to assist Wests Tigers with the corporate reform, so why wouldn’t we let them help us?’’ Balmain chairman Leslie Glen hit out at Wests. “We believe we must strive to become independent as quickly as possible to become resilient and worthy of our heritage,’’ Glen said. “Staying moribund, as Wests appear to desire, is not part of our ambition. “Independent members of our Wests Tigers board who can offer us innovation and ideas are welcomed, not shunned. “Balmain doesn’t want the same old people to continue warming seats on the Wests Tigers board, including myself. “The Balmain Tigers board welcome change which will lead to a stronger Wests Tigers.’’ Balmain’s side of the joint venture has been in constant dialogue with the NRL.
