On 3 October 1984, Tim and his small expedition team reached the summit on a first ascent, using a new route which had never been climbed – without oxygen in semi-alpine style. Almost everything that could go wrong went wrong, and they lived to tell the tale. Nothing has recounted this captivating story in such raw detail since Lincoln Hall’s book White Limbo ... until now. The 1984 expedition was the first and only time Australia has been in the limelight of the international mountaineering community. According to Walt Unsworth, author of ‘Everest: The Mountaineering History’: Australia is a not a nation with any great tradition of mountaineering and yet the Everest Expedition of 1984 was a model of what an expedition ought to be. Not only that, their actual achievement was astonishing, one of the greatest climbs ever done on the mountain.
