Timely thoughts on fundamentalism from Lincoln Cannon: Religious - TopicsExpress

Timely thoughts on fundamentalism from Lincoln Cannon: Religious and antireligious fundamentalists, theistic and antitheistic fundamentalists, as all fundamentalists, are threatened when we recognize their ideas for what they are: not the whole story. On the one hand, recognizing religious and theistic fundamentalists directly undermines their sense of what is supremely important through the implicit suggestion that their account of supreme importance falls short of the general case. On the other hand, recognizing antireligious and antitheistic fundamentalists indirectly undermines their sense of what is supremely important through the implicit suggestion that their account of others accounts of supreme importance likewise falls short of the general case. By falling short of the general case, by not engaging broader complexities and dynamics, our estimations of supreme importance begin to feel shallow and sickly, even when were not fully aware of the cause. Our compassion and creativity are stifled. Our humanity and its potential are checked.
