Times Campaign: Scrap the directive asking airlines to treat MPs like Maharajas The “aam admi” buzz does not seem to have reached the corridors of power in Delhi. The aviation ministry wants all private airlines to accord royal treatment to nearly 800 members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. A communication sent by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to all airports and airlines asks them to provide a designated protocol officer to meet MPs when they reach the airport and escort them to the lounge. Check-in is to be done by staff while the netas rest there and have free refreshments. After that, they are to be zipped through immigration and/or security checks to an aircraft waiting for them to board. Similar courtesy is to be accorded on arrival too. The state-owned Air India was already providing this Maharaja treatment to MPs. Although the ministry insists no such instructions have been issued to private airlines, an airline official points out that even a communication from DGCA on such an issue cannot be disregarded”. When will our politicians realize that we are a democracy and their job is to serve the people rather than demand a status befitting the kings and princes of yore? Join the Times campaign asking the aviation ministry to scrap this directive.
