The hymn writer, Russell Kelso Carter, wrote the famous hymn Standing on the Promises of God after having suffered from a very serious heart condition at age 30. He promised God that if he was healed or not he would serve the Lord for the rest of his life. He began to stand on the promises of God’s word and lived healthily for another 49 years! The second stanza of the song and the refrain sum up his resolve. They read: Standing on the promises that cannot fail When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail By the living Word of God I shall prevail Standing on the promises of God Refrain: Standing, standing Standing on the promises of God my Savior Standing, standing I’m standing on the promises of God Appeal: God keeps His promises.
