Title: Mayim Hayim - Living Waters Medium: Torn Paper Midrash (paper, oil pastels, glue) Genesis 1:6 & II Kings 5:14 God said, Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water that it may separate water from water... So he [Naaman] went down and immersed himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had bidden him... Artist Statement: My friend & sister in faith, Marian Monihan, mentioned the story of Naamans immersion in the Jordan River during a Bible/Art workshop that I facilitated in March. The session was was part of a series I taught for The Neshama Interfaith Center, and was hosted at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Alpharetta, GA. Earlier this week, when I reread the story in the Book of II Kings for inspiration to finish this piece, I was reminded that the rabbis of the Talmud use this story to show what a faithful human before God & faithful friend to the Jews Naaman is. His very name comes from the Hebrew root word for pleasant. The seven pieces of cardboard can represent the seven days of perfection as demonstrated in Gods creation of the world or the seven immersions of Naaman in the Jordan. I am using this piece as a focal point for my morning prayers today: God, let the living waters of Gods creation provide sustenance, healing & perfect repentance for all those who seek to immerse in your Presence. --Rabbi Pamela Jay Gottfried
