To Our Patrons, My name Maryland Minority. This is my first article post on Facebook, though, if you visit byebyemaryland you can find a short bio and other posts by me. Enjoy! With Inauguration Day in Maryland right around the corner, I feel it is fitting to ring in the historic and ceremonious occasion with an idea that will appeal to even the most skeptical of secessionists. I know what most people are thinking. Why talk of secession now? In a momentous swing of popular opinion, the Maryland electorate voted to oust the de-facto heir apparent to Governor OMalley and change the political leadership of a state that has had mainly Democratic Governors since the inception of the modern political party era (the exceptions to that trend being Spiro Agnew and Bob Ehrlich). It would seem that the tide has turned and talks of secession are no longer necessary or relevant. It would seem that Hogans election provides the dawn of a new era for Marylands political culture. Taking all of what could be into consideration, I still am left with the arduous task of viewing, and re-viewing and again re-viewing, the facts at hand for the great state of Maryland. Hogans win was convincing, but not overwhelming. He won 884,400 votes across the state to Browns 818,890. The Washington Post dubbed the result of the election a stunning upset, which brings us back to reality. This is not the norm in Maryland. Four years, Eight years, Twelve years, Sixteen years.... how long before the norm is again realized in Maryland? Best not to wait around and find out. And then we are left with the daunting scenario of the Republican Executive versus the Democratic Legislature. In the House of Delegates, Democrats control 90 of the available 141 seats. In the Senate, 33 Democratic seats compared to 14 Republican. Rarely in any political model does this recipe lead to anything else but policy gridlock. However, Hogan was able to pull larger percentages of votes in traditional Democratic districts. Baltimore County was Democratic in 2010 but went overwhelmingly Republican in 2014. I am sure that Hogan is up for the fight, and he is definitely going to have to fight, constantly, against a progressive legislature that is fundamentally opposed to his vision of government and policy. Perhaps hell have the same pull with members of the Legislature as he did with the electorate? Again, maybe best not to wait around and see if the Governor Elect will make it happen. So, the proposal is then for secession. Why wait to see if Hogan can make these things happen? Why wait to see if it will be a return to business as usual for Maryland in four years? Or what if it takes forty years? What if this is the moment that forever changes Marylands political identity? Best to cut your losses now, especially with the trend that unfolded in the national elections! This idea would see the traditional ultra-leftist areas of Maryland partner with the District of Columbia and the super-progressive upper counties of Virginia and form their own liberal safe haven. Ultimately, the move serves the interest of three parties: Maryland, Virginia, and the new liberal safe haven to be named at a later date that will be added as the 51st state of the Union. Maryland would then have a political identity that reflects the appearance of its political map. The move would also provide a return to Virginias historical political identity as it would negate the power of the weekday warrior commuter class that has been the root cause of the transformation of Northern Virginia into a progressive playground, and Virginia itself into a “purple” state. The group that is set to gain the most in this set-up is the newly formed liberal safe haven. The people who reside in the District of Columbia will get the long awaited Congressional representation that they have desired. They will then be able to welcome the outlying Maryland counties of Montgomery, Prince Georges, and Charles Counties. Virginia would give up Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William Counties, and the cities therein, to form the new state. The end result would be a new liberal, progressive, and Democratic state with a total population base of roughly 4.7 million people. They would get two Senate seats and gain a minimum of 6 seats in the House at the national level. This type of overwhelming liberalism would attract other nearby leftists out of Maryland and Virginia to make the move to the progressive safe haven. Once there, they can increase taxes and grow government oversight evermore to their hearts content. This sounds like a win/win/win for all three areas involved. As we prepare to ring in New Year’s, and a new era in Maryland politics, let freedom ring and secessionitis spread. Bye-Bye Maryland! Maryland Minority
