To President Susilo Bambang Yuhoyono I would like to offer you, - TopicsExpress

To President Susilo Bambang Yuhoyono I would like to offer you, your wife, and any other Indonesian person affected my sincerest apologies relating to the targeted spying and phone tapping that has occurred in the past. Such an intrusion of privacy on our friend and neighbour is not something that I would ever promote in similar circumstances. As I am sure you are aware, we have an intelligence program. I believe it is the duty of our intelligence program to collect information from all around the world, including our neighbours. I would hope this is conducted in a non-intrusive manner, unlike how it has recently been unveiled to have occurred. These programs do so to ensure the safety of our own country, but also closest friends and allies. I would hope you have intelligence gathering programs, keeping an eye on us for the very same reason. Through this, we watch the other’s back, and we keep each other safe if need be. Australia and Indonesia are very lucky to live in a time and place that is largely untouched from war and strife. We are very lucky to have no need to warn the other of anything, and I hope that continues. The same could not be said for other countries in other parts of the world, and it is for that reason we are cautious. I cannot guarantee that phone tapping and the like will not happen again (I am but a mere citizen), but I would like to think it would not. I would like to say again, on behalf of all that share the same views on this as myself as an Australian citizen; I am sorry. To your continued good health and friendship with us, I wish you the best. Sincerely, an Australian citizen
