I do understand that profiling can easily degenerate into racism or other discriminatory practice, but when you have limited resources you MUST find some way to maximize the results. In law enforcement and terrorist identification focusing your efforts on those who are most likely to be criminals or terrorists is efficiency. What is the point of searching grandmothers at airports. Yes there might well be a grandmother out there who intends to commit a terrorist act however random checking of grandmothers is not likely to catch the one. However, checking grandmothers is going to decrease the likelihood of checking all the actual terrorists and, thereby, allowing some to get through to do their damage. We definitely want to contain the possibility that profiling will degenerate into racism or other discriminatory practice, yet also allow it controlled use to maximize our bang for the buck.
