To all Southern University Band fans, alumni, supporters and all band heads, it is true. I have agreed for the Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band to battle the Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South this year on Friday, October 24, in Jackson, Miss. We entered into a 2 year agreement (2014 and 2015) in which we will host a similar event here in Baton Rouge during the fall of 2015. Although I am not fond of having two large bands inside a gymnasium (acoustics, distortion, etc.), I think it will add more excitement and flare to the game experience. In addition, people run into the stadium hours early to witness both bands go at it and neither program benefits from it financially. The game day tickets you purchase goes towards athletics only and although both athletic departments should benefit from the game, It is time that the bands get what we deserve as well. This is the ONLY reason I agreed to do it. Although this is a small step in the right direction, it is my desire that the event will grow in the future where we can host the battle of the bands in larger and more acoustic friendly venues, preferably the stadiums! This will be the first time in my memory that the SU Band has been on JSUs campus. Although this is an intense rivalry, I have the utmost respect for the band staff at JSU and we will promote unity and competitive spirits between both groups. The excitement and experience this event will provide for the students in both organizations will promote the social and cultural aspects of HBCU Bands.
