To all of my former students and friends of music especially the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Please read. Thank you Carl. As I’m certain all of you have heard by now, the Atlanta Symphony has locked out its musicians, our colleagues, for the second time in two years. Briefly, management is looking for virtually total control of orchestra complement and insurance coverage. As in 2012, management has said that they will cut off benefits as of the end of September (I’m certain they are waiting that long only because the premium has been paid for the month.) This will be an extremely challenging period for the musicians. Please offer to help them in any way you can. I will try to keep you updated on major developments. This action has launched a flood of support of the musicians and spawned numerous blogs expressing outrage at the ASO management action: This is the website of ATL Symphony Musicians, which has information updates and ways to help: atlsymphonymusicians/donate.html Here is the link to Save Our Symphony Atlanta. From their Facebook page: “This citizens advocacy group is organically grown ... out of our mutual interest in saving the ASO. Again, one of the nations top-tier orchestras is marked for destruction by its own parent institution. Weve heard their reasoning behind the cuts -- industry free fall, spiraling deficits -- and found these arguments to be disingenuous and without merit. Our goal here is to protect the ASOs future by growing more support through finding and networking friends. If the current stats are any indication, we will be successful.” https://facebook/permalink.php?story_fbid=764274263636769&id=763900620340800&fref=nf Here is the link to a chamber concert on Monday, September 22, sponsored by The ATL Symphony Musicians Foundation, Inc, an educational non-profit organization. terminalwestatl/event/679669/?utm_source=fb1&utm_medium=msh And finally, in case you haven’t seen them, here are just a few of the excellent blog posts discussing the lockout: asocmember.blogspot.mx/2014/09/what-atlanta-deserves.html caseartslaw/news/blog.php artsbeat.blogs.nytimes/2014/09/07/the-atlanta-symphony-orchestra-locks-out-its-players-again/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 artsculture.blog.ajc/2014/09/13/orchestras-size-resonates-as-big-issue-in-atlanta-symphony-dispute/ artsculture.blog.ajc/2014/09/07/deadline-passes-without-aso-contract-agreement-musicians-expect-lock-out/ robknopper/blog/2014/9/7/how-you-can-help-the-atlanta-symphony-musicians maskoftheflowerprince.wordpress/2014/09/12/mismanagement-at-atlanta-goes-right-to-the-top/ adaptistration/blog/2014/09/12/deconstructing-some-spin-from-atlanta/ clatl/freshloaf/archives/2014/09/09/afm-president-slams-stanley-romansteins-starve-out-tactics slippedisc/2014/09/if-atlantas-lockout-succeeds-music-across-america-will-be-the-poorer-for-it/ songofthelark.wordpress/ slippedisc/2014/09/atlanta-chair-tells-board-expect-no-progress-any-time-soon/ songofthelark.wordpress/2014/09/11/the-atlanta-symphony-facebook-page-loses-it/ songofthelark.wordpress/2014/09/11/the-atlanta-symphony-facebook-page-loses-it/ artsculture.blog.ajc/2014/09/10/locked-out-aso-musicians-receiving-chorus-support-nationally-locally/ maskoftheflowerprince.wordpress/2014/09/09/a-masterclass-in-bad-optics/ slippedisc/2014/09/atlanta-boss-gets-a-bonus-for-the-jobs-he-cuts/#comments slippedisc/2014/09/atlanta-to-musicians-your-keys-have-been-de-activated/
