To be honest, when all the buzz started about the Boys and Girls Club , I didnt pay attention. I didnt really know anything about the program, and as far as I was concerned, it didnt apply to us because Hannas afterschool care was handled. I really thought it was something that applied to inner city kids, so I didnt pay attention. My hands and brains were full of just trying to meet all of Hannas needs, day to day. She was referred by her school counselor, and even then, I felt like she didnt need to participate because I could afford her daycare, and that we shouldnt take a slot that should go to someone who needed the care but couldnt afford it. But the school counselor was pretty insistent that she did, in fact, qualify for other reasons, and that she should go. I agreed to give it a trial, and it is probably one of the best decisions I ever made. The B & G club provides Hanna with tutoring, homework assistance ( they make sure all of her homework is completed and correct), fun and safe physical and group activities, help with her social skills, and this week, she was allowed to give back by helping with landscaping there. I can see a big difference that this program has made in Hannas academics, her attitude, and her self esteem.
