To develop the game and create opportunities for players from emerging cricket playing nations in the continent, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is mulling over making the Emerging Teams Cup a regular biennial fixture. The inaugural edition of the tournament will be held in Singapore from August 17 where U-23 teams of Test nations such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will compete with emerging countries Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Nepal. Former Test cricketer Venkatpathy Raju, who took over from Venkatesh Prasad as ACC’s new development officer, confirmed that the council is looking to make the tournament a regular fixture. “The ACC in its AGM discussed making the Emerging Cup a regular biennial fixture. This will not only give opportunities to the cricketers, who have graduated from U-19 to U-23, but will also help other emerging countries play against the Test playing nations and get some experience of quality cricket,” Raju told dna. Raju added that the tournament will help India like how it helped Australia in throwing up talent. “This tournament is a fantastic opportunity for the fringe players. See how the Emerging tournament in Australia helped giving us some of the best cricketers,” he said. India has participated regularly in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia till 2011, after which it was discontinued. India will be led by Mumbai’s Suryakumar Yadav in the tournament.
