To estimate how much sunlight you have left in the day, look at the horizon and find the location of the sun, without looking directly at it raise your hand sideways and see how many fingers fit between them. Four fingers between the sun and the horizon indicates 1 hour of sunlight remaining with each additional finger representing 15 more minutes. Warning: This method is approximately correct for latitudes where the bulk of the worlds population lives. However as you go above 50 degrees latitude and get closer to the Northern or Southern Poles (e.g. Canada or Scandinavia), the sun will appear for longer near to the horizon and this method will not work.
