To listen, learn and be changed. Thats really the essence of any trip Ive taken over the past 20 plus years to both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. I dont claim to have any especially fantastic gifts to share or talents to offer other than to simply love others, to share time and experiences with them, and to work along side them to improve their lives while enriching my own in ways that make living worth living. Im still processing what Ive learned from this most recent trip to the Dominican Republic, trying to understand what draws me back to that special island over and over again, and what my future holds because of these experiences. I know that my resolve to live simply so that others can simply live is reinforced and deepened with each trip. I know that my disdain of our treatment of people of other nationalities is increased as I see the way Haitians are disrespected and worse by Dominicans, just as we Americans do to people from Central and Latin America who are in the USA without proper documentation. I know that my heart has been broken over and over again, as Im sure Gods is, to see children without shoes, without clean water to drink and nutritious meals to fill their stomachs, without schools to attend, without knowing the unconditional love of Jesus. My primary responsibility right now is to raise Izabelle to the best of my ability. Beyond getting her off to college in a few short years, I know God has great plans for me. My heart and eyes are wide open for accepting whatever that may be. Perhaps that was the point of this trip, to remind me that there will always be more work to be done, and to be open to the opportunities and possibilities as they present themselves!
