To me this picture has rarely been excelled in conveying the intensity of maritime activity on the Clyde Navigation as it was built to serve the Second City of the Empire and the other important industrial towns along its shores. It shows two steam tug of the Clyde Shipping Company (for a long time the worlds oldest steamship company, having been founded in 1814) towing a member of the famous City Line fleet down through the narrowest past part of the navigable channel between Whiteinch on the north bank and Linthouse on the south side. The narrownwss of the channel was intensified by the towering, incomplete hull of new ships and the attendand cranes of Barclay Curles shipyard at Whiteinch and Alexander Stephens at Linthouse. The City Line could always be associated with Barclay Curle as its founder, Glaswegian shipowner George Smith had many of his vessels built by them Adding to the busy scene at this part of the river can be seen theCNT cross river vehicle ferry at the Linthouse side - it kept running until replaced by the new Clyde Tunnel, half a century ago.
