To my fellow Texans, family, friends, and whoever else comes to shop at HEB. So Im gonna drop a little knowledge on yall to help out my fellow self checkout operators who work for HEB. The first thing Im going to say is that youre using a machine without a mind. You need to use the interface to tell it what you want to do. Heres a step by step on how to use the machine: 1. Hit start (I know it seems self explanatory or obvious but youd be surprised at the looks we receive when someone in frustration cant seem to get the item to scan) 2. Scan an item and then put it in the bag (the exceptions to this are cases of water, big bags of dog food and the occasional HUGE pack of toilet tissue or towels) 3. If it doesnt have a bar code because its produce, donuts, olive bar, fresh ground coffee or anything else in creation without that little bar code, you need to hit the produce button on the screen. Then type in the code corresponding to it which can be found either on a sticker on the item or on a sign around the register (if not just walk up to the attendant and ask) 4. If you have booze, 99% of the time were gonna ask for your ID, so dont throw a fit. Just walk up to us and show us it, we cant walk to you because weve got to watch the other 3-5 registers. 5. You need to hold the item over the scanning part of the machine unless its an item needing to be weighed, otherwise the machine will flip out. 6. The only acceptable methods of payment for the machines are cash, credit/debit, food stamps and gift cards. That means if you have a check or WIC you need to be using a register with a person on it. 7. Dont scan the coupons until you answer the coupon question! Also if it doesnt scan check the screen and in the amount paid section if there is an amount it worked. Otherwise just walk the coupon up to us and well help. 8. Answer all the questions on the screen and pay before you take your stuff off the bagging area otherwise the machine will beep at you and not let you finish. 9. Once youve answered all the questions and selected your method of payment its all up to from that point on. 10. If its busy and you only have 1-2 items while waiting in line, look (happily) at the person running the station and theyll more than likely call you up to them to checkout. But dont be that person to just automatically assume you can walk up, we could be helping another customer or dealing with another problem. 11. Put your stuff in your shopping cart once youve paid (unless its a small red one, those need to be returned) and go on your merry way or return the cart for us please. Other random things about the checkout process: -You cant buy gift cards on the U-Scans -Almost all produce has a sticker on it with the number you have to type in -Make sure the machine can handle cash if youre paying by that or wanting cash back -If a price seems wrong please tell us calmly and well work to figure it out -The bagging area has a scale to make sure youre bagging the correct scanned item. Its purpose is to hold your scanned items so tell your kids to not monkey around on it, dont rest your hands, feet, purse or anything else on it so you can continue to check out. -Also when arriving to the self checkout arrive from a single file line and not a glob behind the register otherwise that just causes unnecessary traffic.
