I would say without a doubt, the best fighting fish i have played would be,Yellow fin tuna,or albacore or skip jack tuna...line certainly peels off with these babies and they are just like torpedos in the water...and when they are landed in the boat, they thrash them selves silly,so much energy...I just loved being on the sea...being escorted by dolphins playing around the boat...always thought i would hit one but no ...or sitting on a mark spinning some yarns, when casually swimming by would be a little blue penguin...i always asked it what are you doing way out here...another time i was anchored of Mt Maunganui near the islands just of shore...and a huge splash was heard Gene jumped up on the cabin...saying wow what was that..i just caught a glimpse of an Orca disappearing under the sea...Or you could be trying to get your bait to the bottom fast enough to beat the Sooty Shear Waters(Mutton Birds)...they would be right along side us... There was some very good Kingis to be caught around white island or the Raurimus..i think they have a size limit on them now...But you dont have to go out that far really my favourite haunt was and still is Whale Island or the maori name is Moutohora meaning whale...if you have seen it it looks like a whale...Species i have landed ...Shoally snapper==Big dark headed snapper==Kahawai==Flying fish==piper==kingfish==Tuna skippy==Albacore==Pink and Blue Maomao and between Whale and Coast-lands== Gurnard a very good eating fish...These fish when landed and in the bin make grunting sounds for the uninitiated the sound can be of putting i call them Grunters...like all fish when caught ,have beautiful colours..but fades as the fish dies... I havent covered trout fishing Rainbow and Brown...and netting fresh water koura in Lake Tarawera...thats another story for another time...
