To our readers: Following the concerns offered by so many of you over our recent This Week in North Fork History column, our editorial staff has decided to cease publishing this regular feature while we discuss new ways to present it. The history column continues to be one of our most read regular features and has generally been well received, so we want to continue to present it each week. But we want to do so in a way that informs and entertains our readers without offending them. History can be both fun and quirky, enlightening and influential. It can also be painful for those who have lived through some of its darker chapters. A lot of our readers have reached out to us in the past couple of days suggesting that our history column is not an appropriate forum for tragic stories. This is something weve felt conflicted about internally and your concerns have forced us to have much needed conversations among our editors over the value of including such items in this popular column. We appreciate your opinions and will continue over the next several weeks to discuss how we can use our more than 150 years of print archives to present history in a weekly feature our readers will continue to enjoy. As always, feel free to email me at gparpan@timesreview with any comments, concerns or suggestions regarding this column or any other editorial features. Thank you for your continued readership. Sincerely, Grant Parpan Executive Editor
