To parents and friends of third grade students in Palm Beach County: if you know a child who received a level 1 on the Reading or Math FCAT and is in danger of not being promoted to fourth grade, we will provide free tutoring for that child in order to help remediate his or her scores. I am a parent and a PBC school teacher, and although I understand and appreciate standards, the single thing I have abhorred was the practice of retaining children in third grade because of a single test (and/or any assessments after that to substitute but still dont work). I dont know why it took me this long to actually do something about it, but here we are. I have a lot to say about schools and FCAT, but please lets not turn this post into a debate or discussion unless you can provide facts that can help facilitate understanding At this point, I will provide tutoring and I know many intelligent, good-hearted high school students who need community service hours. We can do this!
