To photoshop or not photoshop (or any image alteration). A big question. I saw a comment recently on a photo sharing group stating that the writer liked natural not photoshopped images, and theres even a group dedicated to unphotoshopped images. The thing is that its all a matter of degree. Even before digital photography was invented images were being manipulated in the dark room, the same roll of film would come out slightly different at each developer it was taken to. Every jpeg image taken has been changed from its original state by the software inside the camera. In addition, how do you define natural? Our eyes are clever pieces of kit, and no man made system has yet matched them. But its still a process of taking light to make an image, and we all know that things look different to us in different lighting conditions. And other animals see things differently to us. I take all my photos in RAW format, which keeps the image as received by my cameras sensor, with no loss of data (known as lossless) and then I adjust using my software. I think the trick is to use the software to make a good photo without it being obvious that its been used. Unless of course you want it to look unnatural, nothing wrong with that! However, there have been a few times Ive posted a picture and then thought oh no that looks rubbish. Heres two pictures of a Red Backed Shrike, well actually its the same picture. Which is best?
