To quote, it is striking to note that these three countries have one thing in common: they share more or less exactly the same degree of measured income inequality. On the other hand, in the United States – which is characterised by far higher income inequality – people do not see any reason for redistributive state intervention ===== Differences in advanced countries - USA, France and Germany. In USA, I guess, the end goal is higher inequality, which probably is an indicator to them on their leadership in the world! In Germany, there is a bigger shout for even better redistribution - a word that is probably banned in USA ;) My ex-German colleague said of course, there are rich people in Germany but I dont see such an ocean of difference that I see in Hyderabad and Bangalore. Our Government provides with the basics without any cost - education, healthcare etc, but here many people do not have the very basics needed for living (that was in 2007!). I guess it also has to do with population - for example, population of Germany may be closer to that of one state in India, say Tamil Nadu. France, as one of my previous posts said, has just doubled in population over the past 100 years, while USA has grown 100 times!
