To root plants that put out branches low to the ground ( azaleas, forsythia, clematis, etc), cut a hole in the side of a pot near the bottom. Gently shove the branch through the hole and out the top of the pot. Pack dirt around the branch so that it runs up through the dirt. Leave the pot sitting in the garden under/to the side of the mother plant. I leave this arrangement for 6 months to a year, depending on when I get back to the project. After the branch has had enough time to make roots inside the pot, cut the branch to separate it from the mother plant. Water the pot thoroughly now because the branch wont be getting any more fluid from the mother. When you are ready to plant, just gently take the plant and its rootball out of the pot......no need to disturb the new root system.
