To those nationalist statists who love to say, Let us never - TopicsExpress

To those nationalist statists who love to say, Let us never forget! in reference to 9/11, I say, Why? What horrible thing would happen if we forgot? More importantly, what do we gain by remembering--and obsessing, and worrying? We gain fear, anger, paranoia, and a mentality ripe for the growth of a totalitarian police state. Even if we accepted the government-approved version of events from 9/11 (which I dont nearly), keep in mind that in 2001 alone, somewhere around FIVE TIMES as many Americans were murdered by other Americans than were murdered by scary foreign terrorists. And around TEN times as many died in car crashes. Yes, one event made stunning imagery and fear-mongering possible (how convenient for those in power), but statistically speaking, 9/11 is very much something we do NOT actually need to remember. But those in power have to keep harping on it--year after year, when no such event has happened again (for some inexplicable reason)--because if the people arent AFRAID of something, they never have an incentive to trade in their freedom for authoritarian control. So no, dont worry about or obsess over terrorism. And if you want to forget 9/11, go right ahead. In the long run, the main significance of that event was that the resulting fear and sorrow duped millions of people into cheering for war-mongering and domestic oppression. If forgetting the event makes people condone tyranny less often, then forget it.
