To those who may be against vaccinating their children (or getting vaccinated), from Richard Dawkinss The Ancestors Tale: As it happens, in the case of epidemics, for once there really is a natural rubicon: a critical mass of infections above which the virus, or bacterium, suddenly takes off and dramatically increases its rate of spreading. This is why public officials try so hard to vaccinate more than a threshold proportion of the population against, say, whooping cough. The purpose is not just to protect the individuals vaccinated. It is also to deprive the pathogens of the opportunity to reach their own critical mass for take off.
