Today, 30 years ago, Stanislav Petrov, a Lt. Col on duty at the command center for the Soviet early warning system, saved the world from nuclear war by ignoring the readings on his radar that showed multiple American nuclear missiles headed towards the Soviet Union. With nothing more than a hunch and reasoning, he cited the warning on his screens as a malfunction. Had he not, nuclear war would have resulted and we most likely would not be here.
