Today, European leaders agreed to propose Jean Claude Juncker, former prime minister of Luxembourg and chairman of the eurogroup, as the new European Commission President. Only the European Parliament has to confirm, but this is a rather formality. The Economist writes a critical article on Juncker this week. Lacking the administrative skills to reform an unwieldy bureaucracy, a dinosaur who loves to drink, smoke and gossip, the editors of the British newspaper deem him not able to give meaning to the outcomes of the European elections, which saw a sharp increase of euro-skeptic parties. They conclude: Mr Juncker will become an accidental president because he is most people’s second choice.
