Today I am disappointed. Our legislators had an opportunity to show true leadership - to stand up for what is right and to admit that their reckless tax giveaways to the very wealthy last year was not the right decision for North Carolina. We cannot cut things that are essential for our growth and prosperity in the future. Unfortunately, that is exactly what we did and now, we have a budget for the upcoming year that forces us to pay the price. This is a plan that further undermines and disrespects teachers by playing chess with education funding and a plan that continues the cuts to essential programs that are important to North Carolina families - Medicaid, Colleges and Universities, At-Risk Youth to name a few. Further, our Governor had an opportunity yesterday to show true leadership at his budget press-conference; to let legislative leaders know that this budget was not right for North Carolina. Instead, he refused to stand up to his own party for what is right and rather called this budget a victory for North Carolina. The only victory I see is the political chess match that the Republican-led General Assembly has played in an effort to win in November.
