Today I am thankful for God’s word and His searching eye. As I read Proverbs 21:2, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.” It struck me how this is not only aimed at the wicked, or at leaders but hits to the heart of EVERY man, sinner and saint alike. We all think that what we do is right; but, God sees the heart; He weighs your motives. He knows if it is the trappings of spiritual self-righteousness or if it is the earnest seeking and worship of His HOLY Self. God sees if it is the promotion of pride or the humbling of holiness. Whether you preach or pray, feast or fast, witness or weep, in ALL that you do…it is to be done in the name of Christ, to the glory of God and God alone sees your heart. In I Samuel 15:13-26 King Saul justified his sin by calling it worship and sacrifice. God called it sin. He said obedience is better than sacrifice. Look at Zechariah 7:4-10; Isaiah 58:5-7 (actually read this whole awesome chapter), Jeremiah 2:31-37; see how even doing right, with the wrong motive, can be ugliness to a Holy God. None of us can trust our own heart; it is deceitfully wicked. Self-distrust is the best path to true godliness. Day by day, minute by minute we ought to be trembling in light of our own designs yet boldly grounding our confidence in the One who weighs our heart, tests our spirit and knows our motives. This is why I exhort you to do as David did and moment by moment look to God to “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalms 139:23-24). You must allow God to lead, not your heart. You must follow the Holy One of Israel, your Lord and King Jesus; you are not to follow after your heart, the lusts of your flesh or worldly delusions. God desires obedience more than sacrifice; He would have mercy rather than sacrifice. Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart and lean not, rest not, follow not, your own understanding. In ALL your ways acknowledge Him, think on Him, depend on Him, obey Him and He WILL direct and guide your paths. Don’t be wise in your own eyes; instead, fear the Lord, reverence Him, fear His judgment, tremble before Him and depart from evil. Press on today, not in your own heart and strength, but press on IN Christ!
