Today I conducted conducted a Creative Workshop with wonderful kids of Kore Village of Kano, A hero in Kisumu for the Kisumu Book Project. My partner friends and I are keen to write and publish childrens books in DhoLuo, recognizing that there are limited number of storybooks and novels of the contemporary setting and occurrences for kids. We seek to wean kids from only the stories of yore and incorporate the real life characters, events, passions and dreams in local languages. To this end, today we were are n diddle to travel to the moon with these kids, create shoes that grow with the wearer rather than wear off, conduct a wrestling contest and become presidents and scientists and superstars. The book will be out soon, and I hope the kids perspective, psychology, wonder and limitlessness will come out. I enjoyed the workshop of course and learnt a lot. It is ironic that in the reading sessions, Luo kids were quite excellent in reading in English and Swahili yet stammered through reading In DhoLuo, the language of their daily communication. It should not be that our kids find it okay for books to express our world in a foreign/second/third language and strange for our mother tongues to do the same. I know that a lot of my friends friends and acquaintances also find it crazy. So I ask, will you join me in this quest to beautify our tongue and tell the story of hacking acquaintance computer in DhoLuo? Arwako uu!
