Today I heard a news from my dad that his friends daughter committed suicide because she dint get the MBBS admission she wanted. As he told me how shattered her family is now, I sat there silently wishing someone was there to stop her from doing this. Its not easy to make everyone understand the exact feelings we are going through, but I do believe sometimes a hug of compassion is all what we need to feel alive again. This incident reminded me about a status I wrote few months back. Its about how much our lives are controlled by this society. Sharing it here. My friend called me today to tell that he got a job(construction-site supervisor) in Chennai, and will be leaving this week. While he described his job and how tough it is, he added that its not a white collar job like how most of his B.tech friends got and so he is worried what people will say. I asked him whether his parents like the job and he said,they are happy with it since he got it after waiting for long. I told him,dont worry about society, after all its your life and you need to live it. So do things that makes you happy. Wishing him the very best for his future,and bidding goodbye we kept the phone. But dont you think we all face this, What will society think ? problem, one way or the other? I think it all begins with the 10th std exam results! From then on you are a part of that clan, living according to the expectations they have designed for all. Let me phrase some of the very usual contexts of life; After 10th std : Which group did she take?.. Commerce?! Oh why! Poor in studies? - dear, we live in a Nation where a tea-seller reached to be the Prime Minister. So how can a group stop you from what you want to achieve! If you hope you can make them shut up by choosing Maths or Science group..BEWARE! They will torture you until you join a Crash Course on Entrance exams,just not to miss the fun of commenting on your digits... When your entrance results are out : 72345?! Is that a rank or his bikes price! ! What was he doing in the Coaching Center? I am sure he had a girlfriend! - Dear,more than forty-five lakh students apply for these entrance examinations and it is not necessary that everyone gets within 100.Some of the worlds most famous and richest men are college dropouts.So dont let those digits estimate his capability. If you are lucky enough to run to a completely different state for college, then you have escaped from a lot of those questions and assumptions.But do remember! They are there in Facebook too! From your status updates to pictures you post to the check-ins you make, they are watching you. Who is that guy with you on Facebook photo? Is he your boyfriend? ! Dont ruin your familys name...we are already searching guys for you in m4marry! That is where malayalis get married. - OMG! He could be just a friend! And please no, she is not an online product to be chose from sites looking the appearance and manufacturing(background) details. Who listens! Your voices fall on deaf ears when it comes to marriage. In a relationship? Good, just forget her! Want to study more? Do that after marriage! Doesnt like the guy? Whats wrong with him. He earns 75K a month. They are ready with all the answers you need...! With all that initiations and interest they show, we do wonder who is actually getting married here! And after marriage,these very same people will have more to say. . . The bride is dark, poor guy! The groom is fat, poor girl. Wonder how their kids will look like. They will go on and on and on...UNTIL...YOU RESPOND! Society, they are the people around you and it grows bigger with the friends of friends you have. And as long as you allow them to interfere in your business, they will do it happily, even at the cost of your tears. This society has eaten up many heads and ruined many families.Many teenagers have killed themselves in fear of what this society will say, about their low marks in board exams or the rumors made on their college affair.Many lives have lived far away from their people, just because this society couldnt stop talking about their past. But all these will not stop them, they will still continue talking. . .and will continue to be the same; Unless you realize, its your life and you will have to live it. Unless you realize,your past is what that made you stronger today. Unless you realize, its just one life and you cannot give it away for pleasing others and UNLESS, you become confident of what you are.
