Today I joined my colleagues in the Council to deliver on a promise we made to crack down on the highly unregulated industry of clothing donation bins. The bill we passed today will not only give DSNY the power to immediately remove these faux donation dumpsters from public property but now first-time violators will face a $250 fine with repeat offenders receiving a $500 fine. My office has received countless complaints about these bins over the past year - not only are these bins eyesores, they deceive well-intentioned and generous New Yorkers who believe they’re donating their used clothing to charity.
