Today I needed a bottle of drawing ink. Normally Ive been buying my ink at Hobby Lobby. Ive decided to quit shopping there. So Wilbur and I took it as an opportunity to drive to Minneapolis and purchase my ink at a local art supply there. I ended up buying a bunch of ink (at a real art supply store btw), we went to the Birchwood and Ikea. I thought about visiting Liz Miller and David Hamlow as they work on her installation but decided not to bother them. Anyway I got thinking about Dons Hobby. Dons Hobby was a local art store here in Mankato. They went out of business when Hobby Lobby moved in. Dons was a cool place, I could have bought my ink there. The point I want to make is that Dons wasnt a big corporation. It was a local place. I didnt know what their politics were or what their religion was. They kept that to themselves. They didnt try to impose their religious beliefs on the rest of us, they just wanted our business. To be honest I didnt think much about Dons going out of business. I guess I figured if they couldnt compete then they deserved to. What is so interesting to me is how a corporation becomes so disconnected from people that they are able to, in a sense, totally ignore their customers. Its odd, its weird. I also have to say I really hate this convergence of politics, religion and commerce. Sorry Dons Hobby. Hobby Lobby you obviously dont want my business.
