Today, I offered an amendment to prevent insurance companies from discriminating against women. It would have stopped insurance companies from charging small businesses higher premiums for their female employees, and from selling group plans that deny women contraception or critical maternity care coverage. The amendment failed by a vote of 187 to 223. I am disappointed that the Republicans sided with the insurance companies over women and their families. Once again, they have shown that they put the special interests ahead of the needs of their constituents. Making women pay more for their health insurance is discrimination, plain and simple. It is bad for middle class and working families – and for small businesses – in Ventura County and across the country.
