Today, I posted the following on OOIDAs face book. I am a member of OOIDA. In my opinion though, OOIDA has to adjust to the new trucking realities. OOIDA has to become exactly what they state here-above. An Association to represent the interests OF PROFFESIONAL TRUCK DRIVERS. Not only of independent - not only of Owner Operators like myself. Of ALL professional drivers. It has been proven, as a result of the recent FCMSA new rules, that OOIDA with 150,000 members is too small to be heard and taken seriously. There are almost 5 million commercial drivers in the U.S. (ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/International/border.asp?redirect=GenStats.asp) OOIDA needs to gather them ALL in solidarity. Only then we, commercial drivers, will have a voice. We do not need Unions - it is not about couple cents more or less per mile -. It is about respect. The public, the brokers, the shippers, the receivers, the cups, the judges, the lumpers, the loaders, the unloaders, they all treat the commercial drivers as if we were trash. As if we were nothing but dirt. This has to change and now is the time. OOIDA, change your name to CDSA (Commercial Drivers Solidarity Association) and go after the 5 million commercial drivers. Unite all commercial drivers, and give us a voice helping us gain the respect we deserve. Only then you, as an Association, will be heard and taken seriously.
